Crisp has reached a milestone by becoming the first supermarket in the Netherlands to achieve B Corp certification. This certification, awarded by the independent non-profit organization B Lab, confirms Crisp's commitment to social and ecological responsibility. With this recognition, Crisp aims to raise the bar even higher by promoting the transition to regenerative farming. By 2030, at least 30% of the vegetables and fruits sold by Crisp must come from regenerative farms.
Achieving the B Corp certification places Crisp among other socially and sustainably operating companies such as Tony’s Chocolonely and Patagonia. To qualify for the certification, companies must score at least 80 points in the B Impact Assessment. Crisp exceeded this with a score of 109 points. Co-founder Michiel Roodenburg sees the certification as a validation of Crisp's unique position in the sector. He hopes that B Corp will become a standard requirement for all supermarkets in the future, contributing to greater transparency and further improvements in social and ecological performance.
With the B Corp certification, Crisp aims to further enhance its ecological performance by promoting regenerative agriculture. Regenerative farming focuses on soil restoration and avoids the use of chemical pesticides, heavy machinery, and artificial fertilizers. Crisp is the only supermarket participating in Boeren Natuurlijk, a national collaboration supported by partners such as Naturalis and Wageningen University. The goal is to make regenerative farming profitable and scalable by bringing the harvest to consumers.
The first four contracts with regenerative farms have been signed. Farms such as permaculture farm Schevichoven and strip-cropping farm Zonnegoed are now supplying their products to Crisp. According to Roodenburg, regeneration goes beyond sustainability; it is about making a positive impact. By making fixed price and volume agreements with farmers, Crisp stimulates economic security. Customers receive local, fresh, and pesticide-free vegetables and fruits delivered to their homes in the Netherlands and Flanders. Gerard Teuling, sectormanager Agrifood at MVO Nederland, praises Crisp's ambition as a step towards restoring ecosystems and improving Dutch biodiversity.
