Consumer votes against 'lemonade tax' on plant-based milk

  • 20 October 2023

As the world transitions towards more sustainable and healthier consumption, the government has recently decided to implement the so-called "lemonade tax" on plant-based milk. Yet, astonishingly, sugary milk products such as chocolate milk are exempted from this tax. The outcome? Starting from January 2024, the tax on plant-based milk products will sharply rise from €8.83 (in 2022) to €26.13 per 100 liters.

This decision doesn't just affect the average plant-based milk enthusiasts but hits especially hard for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant. The question arises as to why this "lemonade tax," essentially a consumption tax, is applied to plant-based milk and not sugary dairy drinks. Due to this move, plant-based milk will become significantly more expensive, deterring people from opting for this environmentally-friendly alternative. As a result, the objectives of the protein transition—aiming to reduce animal proteins in favor of plant proteins—are jeopardized. Isn't it time everyone had a fair shot at an affordable, climate-friendly, and animal-friendly choice?

Petition

However, there's a silver lining to this dark cloud. On October 24th, a petition - with almost 40,000 signatures - will be presented to the Standing Committee on Finance. Furthermore, popular plant-based milk brands 'Oatly' and 'Alpro' have joined the movement. And the pivotal moment is approaching: a day after the petition is submitted, the tax plan, including the controversial "lemonade tax," will be discussed in the House of Representatives.
