Column Saskia Stender: Another certificate? Yes, for AI

The smell of freshly baked cookies still lingers in the factory when we’re informed that yet another certificate is required. As if HACCP, BRC, and IFS weren’t enough already. Now there’s one more that you can’t ignore: AI literacy. Since February 2025, organisations are required to take action to ensure knowledge of artificial intelligence is in place. This applies to everyone involved with AI within the organisation, from operators to management.

AI literacy isn’t just about understanding how an algorithm works or how to prompt effectively. It’s primarily about awareness: understanding the risks and opportunities AI brings. Ethical and social considerations play a major role. How do you make fair decisions? How do you prevent discrimination by an AI system? What data can be shared, and what should never leave the organisation?

A concrete risk is uploading confidential documents to an AI tool. Even if the data isn’t immediately used for training, it does get stored somewhere. If the system gets hacked, sensitive company information could easily end up exposed — and the fines are no joke. Linking your inbox or SharePoint to an AI tool might seem clever, but it’s a recipe for trouble. Before you know it, everyone’s reading along.

All companies must now map out which systems they use, assess whether staff have sufficient knowledge, and offer training where needed. Quickly looking something up or relying on common sense no longer cuts it. The legislation is in place, the government will no longer advise — only inspect. It’s up to you now.

In the food industry, we’re no strangers to certification. Still, this one feels different. AI won’t be a passing trend that fades away. Better book that training now — this certificate is here to stay.
