Flevoland Province is supporting start-up OVDesigns from Lelystad to set up a local circular chain around coffee grounds. OVDesigns will turn coffee grounds and recycled plastic into products such as trays and wall panels. The advantage of the 'coffee grounds plastics' is that it can be reused several times to make new products.
The quantities of coffee grounds in the Netherlands are huge, making scaling up possible. Coffee grounds are a clean and non-contaminated raw material when properly separated. Products made from coffee grounds can be reused several times.
OVDesigns currently sources coffee grounds from England, Germany and France while there is plenty of coffee grounds available in the Netherlands. Olaf Vermeulen, OVDesigns director, and chain manager Marcel Roeleveld are committed to setting up the coffee grounds chain in the Netherlands too. In the future, when OVDesigns has found buyers, they will also start using the coffee grounds from the provincial house.
