Cif winner of the Afvalfonds Packaging Awards

On Friday 10 June 2022, nine awards were presented at the Bomencentrum in Baarn during the first edition of the Afvalfonds Packaging Awards. Unilever won the overall prize with its refill packaging for Cif. In addition, Umincorp was declared the public winner by the consumer with the most votes of the total of 14 nominees. Finally, winners were announced in seven categories.

Categories and winners

  • Municipality with a proven, effective collection system for all packaging streams, resulting in high quality and quantity of collected material' category: Wierden
  • Municipality with the most effective communication (campaign) with residents about (litter) collection' category: Waalwijk
  • - Category for "Municipality/ business sector with the best joint initiative to reduce litter": De Bilt
  • - Packaging companies with the most innovative application of recyclate in packaging' category: Albert Heijn & Hordijk
  • - Category 'packaging business with the best recyclable packaging': BVP Verpakkingen
  • - Packaging business category with the best reusable packaging': Unilever with Cif
  • - Sorters/recyclers with the best innovation in sorting and/or recycling of packaging waste' category: Umincorp

Overall winner Cif

The overall prize was won by Unilever with its Cif refill packaging. This makes Unilever the first company in the cleaning segment with refill packaging. The refill packaging for Cif reduces volume during transport because less water needs to be transported. The packaging also saves on materials.

Public winner

In addition to the professional jury, consumers were also asked which innovation they thought would contribute most to a sustainable society. The winner of the public award is Umincorp. Whereas in the past the material offered was only suitable for incineration, Umincorp has succeeded in recovering various types of plastic from consumer waste by introducing new and innovative separation techniques. More than 60% of plastic packaging can now be recovered from waste, with an average purity of 95%.
