On Saturday 29 September 2018, preventive culling of pig farms started in Belgium. The farms in question are located in the buffer zone where wild boars with African swine fever have been found.
A total of 58 farms in the buffer zone are being preventively culled. Together they keep 4,150 pigs, including 350 sows. This concerns 3 professional pig farms, the other farms are small pig farms. In addition to the culling of the pigs, all wild boars in the 63,000 hectare area are killed.
The farms where the pigs are culled receive compensation through aid measures. They will receive compensation per animal of the market price of 5 weeks ago. The affected farms will be empty for at least 18 months.
