As of 2026, stricter monitoring of 'green' claims in EU

  • 18 April 2024

Consumers in Europe will soon have greater certainty about the sustainability claims manufacturers make. From mid-2026, new EU regulations will come into effect to counter misleading information. The European Commission has clarified that 'green' labels can only be used if they genuinely have substance.

Tackling greenwashing

Manufacturers will soon no longer be able to use vague terms such as 'eco-friendly' or 'climate-friendly' without solid evidence. The use of such claims will be more rigorously regulated. For instance, a claim such as 'nature-friendly' must be supported by a recognized certification that meets EU standards.

Stricter requirements for claims about CO2 compensation

The regulations regarding CO2 compensation will also be tightened. Companies will no longer be able to claim that their products do not impact the environment through the offsetting of greenhouse gases. Advertisements that do mention the benefits of compensation projects must clearly specify what the impact is on the company’s total emissions.

Improved information on repair and warranty

The directive also includes provisions for better consumer information about the lifespan of products. Sellers must clearly state how long products can be repaired and what warranties apply. This should help consumers make more informed choices in a market increasingly focusing on sustainability and long-term use.
