Acquisition of Adriaan Dekker by OPACKGROUP

  • 06 March 2023

Packaging producer OPACKGROUP is taking over the operations of Papierindustrie Adriaan Dekker. The proposed takeover decision was officially confirmed at the end of last year by Vincent Tol (managing director Adriaan Dekker) and Joan Hanegraaf (DGA OPACKGROUP).

Wormer-based Adriaan Dekker makes industrial and retail packaging for food and non-food products. The company has been active in the food industry with various paper packaging for decades, but also in sectors such as retail, aviation, construction and automotive. Adriaan Dekker's production lines are highly acclaimed in the packaging market; the BRC-certified manufacturer has been making paper packaging for various applications since 1850.

New packaging concepts

The OPACKGROUP has been investing in making its product range more sustainable for decades. The family-run company produces customer-specific, flexible packaging and films of high quality. New plastic and paper packaging concepts are constantly being developed, via extrusion, lamination, flexo printing and conversion. The company consists of seven subsidiaries and ten production sites (Fardem, Flexpak, Oerlemans Plastics, Oosterwolde Plastic Industry, Perfon, Plasthill and Stempher) which together supply a wide range of packaging and foil products. This gives the company a strong position in the Dutch packaging industry.

Timeline

The target date for the transfer of Adriaan Dekker's operations is 1 May 2023. In that case, production in the North Holland town of Wormer will cease as of 31 March 2023. Until then, Adriaan Dekker will continue to operate under its own name. Upon implementation of the final transfer, the company Paper Industry Adriaan Dekker will cease to exist, after which the activities will be transferred to Rijssen in Overijssel at Packaging Industry Stempher from April. This subsidiary of the OPACKGROUP has already built up considerable expertise in making paper packaging. The site in Wormer could then be turned into a different use for the site. Possibly residential construction will be built there.

Paper packaging

"Transferring the packaging programme to Rijssen represents a further expansion of our flexible packaging product portfolio," Joan said. "We are therefore looking forward to this acquisition. It will allow us to serve our customers even better with a wider range of packaging solutions. We see many opportunities. At Stempher's paper branch alone, the packaging programme brings reinforcement, both in terms of applications and in customised solutions for our clients. Of course, this is an opportunity to extend our sustainable vision of packaging to the new paper packaging portfolio. Which we hope to provide soon."

From sugar packaging to wrapping paper

Owners Vincent and Vanessa Tol of Adriaan Dekker proudly look back at an eventful history of almost 175 years of delivered craftsmanship: "After the takeover of Adriaan Dekker in 2004, a lot has changed within the company. Seizing opportunities in market developments in which the position of paper got an increasingly important role, has brought our company to where we are today. Various investments have been made in the machinery, such as an 8-colour state-of-the-art printing machine from Uteco.  And we have made further professionalisation and automation steps; at all levels. We are therefore proud of the business we have established! We are confident about the future of Adriaan Dekker's products when our operations will be continued by OPACKGROUP after completion of the transaction."
