124 million for approach to circular plastics

  • 18 July 2022

The government has approved the first phase of Circular Plastics NL and is investing 124 million euro from the Growth Fund. With the implementation of Circular Plastics NL, the government, companies and knowledge institutions strive to achieve the circularity goals to recycle 50% of all plastics in 2030. They also strive to reduce the amount of plastics being incinerated.

Consortium

Circular Plastics NL is an initiative of the platform MaterialsNL submitted to the National Growth Fund by the Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate. The initiative came about in cooperation with the National Platform for Plastics Recycling (NPPR). This platform has set up a consortium of over 150 cooperating parties, consisting of universities, colleges, knowledge institutions such as TNO, small and medium-sized enterprises, multinationals, start-ups and civil society organisations.

Investment will be doubled

The investment of 124 million euros is for the programmes that start in 2023 and 2024. For the entire eight-year programme, the government has reserved a total of 220 million euros. This amount will be doubled by industry and other stakeholders in the circular plastics chain.

The programmes and pillars

  • System integration of circular plastics
  • Design of circular plastics
  • Characterisation, sorting and washing
  • Industrialisation of plastics recycling
  • Brightlands Circular Space
