For the seventh time, Food100 has announced the most influential people in the Dutch food sector. These 100 people are pushing for a more sustainable and equitable food system in the Netherlands to address climate and food challenges. Sheila Struyck of the Food100 jury highlights the major food challenges because of the link between climate change and CO2 emissions from food production.
This year's Food100 list emphasizes solutions using AI, reducing food waste and changing consumer behavior. Examples of innovators include Johanna Schacht, who improves food waste monitors with AI; Frank Holleman, who encourages consumers to make more sustainable food choices; and Marco Snikkers, who combats food waste by providing shelf life predictions for fruits and vegetables. The goal of the Food100 is to recognize and support these change-makers in the food sector. The selection was made by an independent jury that evaluated more than 300 candidates based on decisiveness, innovation, sustainability and knowledge sharing.
With the Food100, initiators AgriFood Capital, Food Hub, Food Inspiration and Slow Food Youth Network and the judges want to give food changers a leg up so that they persevere and keep going. "These tacklers deserve recognition and encouragement," says Struyck. "After all, it takes more effort to undertake against the grain or to convince your boss of your innovative plans than to simply do what everyone else is doing."
Six food changers from the Food100 list will be named Food Hero 2023 for their extraordinary achievements in the past year. On Monday, November 20, 2023, the Food100 jury will announce at a special event who has earned this special mention.
