WWF: the Food Pyramid urgently requires an update

  • 06 October 2023

Do you know what's on your plate? Its impact on our planet? Our current eating habits are a central concern in the latest research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-NL). The findings? We're tangled up in sustainability issues, and the "Food Pyramid," our trusted dietary guide, urgently needs a revision.

The reason is alarming: The way we currently eat contributes directly to major global challenges like biodiversity loss, climate change, and deforestation. Corné van Dooren, sustainable food consumption advisor at WWF-NL, states clearly: "The current 'Food Pyramid' doesn't adequately consider sustainability aspects. We need to explore a menu that's in harmony with nature."

With the last update to the "Food Pyramid" already over eight years ago, the WWF research is a powerful call for change. This goes beyond just health; it's about safeguarding our future and that of the upcoming generations. The potential benefits? A revised dietary approach could reduce our diet's CO2 emissions by as much as 83%. Less farmland, less deforestation, less pollution – all within the confines of one planet.

Healthy and diverse

The good news? A sustainable menu doesn't mean compromising on taste or variety. We don't all need to become vegan, but the frequency of animal products in our diet does need to decrease. A greater emphasis on legumes, nuts, and meat alternatives could be the key.
