Consumer confidence in food safety generally declined in the period 2021 to 2023. In 2021, it was higher than a year earlier, where overall consumer confidence was still stable in the 2019 period. This is according to the NVWA Consumer Monitor 2023; Survey of consumer confidence in food safety
Consumers are most confident in the product groups fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, nuts, bread products and cheese. The smallest drop in confidence is seen in the product groups vitamin preparations/food supplements, frozen foods and baby food. Consumers are relatively less concerned about food or food production in 2023 compared to 2021. They are most concerned about food waste, followed by microplastics and genetically modified animals. For food waste, the score is almost the same compared to 2021. Microplastics and genetically modified animals are new aspects that were presented to consumers for the first time this year.
