Waste Fund rewards sustainable packaging choices

The Waste Fund Packaging revealed on 2 October a new approach, "Rate Differentiation 2.0," to encourage manufacturers and importers to use recycled plastic in their packaging. This innovative system aims to close the packaging cycle, positioning the Netherlands as a frontrunner in the sustainability of the packaging industry.

Hester Klein Lankhorst, general director of the Waste Fund, is ambitious. "Our renewed rate differentiation is a crucial step towards our vision for 2050: 100% fossil-free and circular packaging that does not harm people or the environment."

Favorable Rate

At its core, rate differentiation boils down to a simple yet powerful principle: the more sustainable the packaging, the lower the rate manufacturers and importers pay for its recycling. From January 1, 2024, packages made from recycled plastic or those easily recyclable will benefit from a more favorable rate. On the other hand, packages with a lower sustainability score will face a higher rate.

Lowest Rate for Reusable Packaging

Reusable packaging is seen as the pinnacle of sustainability and is therefore rewarded with the lowest rate. As Klein Lankhorst notes, "Reusability is the future. It ranks above recycling in the sustainability hierarchy."

Rate differentiation is not new to the Waste Fund; it was introduced as early as 2019. However, the 2.0 version refines the approach, motivating companies to gradually optimize their packaging. This could be through a choice of specific plastic type or by adjusting labels, aiming to make the packaging more recyclable.
