The Waste Fund Packaging has an urgent message for Dutch politics: we need a Minister of Circular Economy. In a recent open letter addressed to the new informateur and the Second Chamber, the fund advocates for a higher priority for the circular economy and addressing resource scarcity. While the Netherlands already leads in this area, further acceleration of the transition to a circular economy is essential, especially given the current climate.
A circular economy offers numerous benefits, including environmental gains, reduced dependence on oil-producing countries, and strengthening the Dutch economy. To realize these benefits, a robust investment climate is crucial. This requires a coordinated and centralized approach from politics, which is only possible with the appointment of a Minister of Circular Economy.
The Waste Fund Packaging has been playing an essential role in promoting a circular economy for almost 11 years. As the entity responsible for the collection and recycling of packaging in the Dutch market, including the deposit system, the fund contributes €1.2 billion annually to the circular economy.
The fund puts forward five specific proposals for a future coalition agreement:
