Wageningen microbiologists have recently established the Wageningen Microbiome Center (WMC). This initiative, led by Thijs Ettema, highlights the extensive research into micro-organisms at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Since his appointment in 2019, Ettema has been working to enhance the visibility and collaboration within this field. This new center marks a significant step in bringing together various research efforts.
The WMC brings together approximately twenty research groups from WUR, focusing on the study of microbiomes. These groups cover a wide range of topics, from the production of food and biomolecules to the study of micro-organisms in relation to food safety. This integrated approach underscores the versatility of microbial research and its varied applications.
The research efforts extend to areas such as aquaculture, livestock farming, and soil sciences. By studying micro-organisms in different contexts, Wageningen researchers contribute to enhancing food production, safety, and sustainability. This research potentially has a significant impact on both agriculture and broader environmental issues.
In addition to the focus on natural sciences, Hauke Smidt, co-initiator of the WMC, emphasizes the importance of social sciences. The center aims to research the societal aspects of microbiome-related products, such as probiotics, and the influence of genetically modified organisms on microbiomes. This interdisciplinary approach is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the impact of micro-organisms.
The establishment of the WMC is an important step in fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within the Wageningen community. With plans for a new building on the Wageningen Campus, expected to be completed by the end of 2025 or early 2026, a physical foundation is being laid for this collaboration. This center will not only be a hub for scientific research but also a platform for practical applications that can have a wide impact across various sectors.
