Vion introduces VR pig glasses for better animal understanding

  • 02 August 2024

Since 2021, Vion has been using VR goggles that simulate the vision of cattle. The company is now introducing similar technology for pigs. The new virtual reality pig goggles were developed by Peter Menzel from C.O.M. GmbH Wetzlar and Benito Weise from the Chamber of Agriculture of Lower Saxony. This prototype was completed in the spring of 2024 and has now been tested for the first time at the Crailsheim location.

The goggles simulate the specific visual perception of pigs, allowing users to experience the environment from the animals’ perspective. "The perception of pigs differs significantly from that of humans and cattle," explains Dr. Veronika Weber. "Pigs have a wider field of vision and lower visual acuity. They are more sensitive to movement."

Practical application

Vion is using these goggles to train employees and animal welfare officers. At Crailsheim, both versions of the goggles were used: one for pigs and the other for cattle. "The effect of the VR goggles was simply incredible," says Dr. Veronika Weber. "All participants reported a much better understanding of the animals and how they move."

Enhancing animal welfare

The height of pigs’ eyes, just 30 centimeters above the ground, offers a completely different field of vision compared to that of humans or cattle. "This leads to better understanding and treatment of the animals," adds Peter Menzel. Vion aims to use this technology not only to improve animal welfare but also to optimize building measures in slaughterhouses. The introduction of the pig goggles represents a step forward in Vion's ongoing commitment to better understanding and welfare of animals.
