The design of plastic packaging plays a crucial role in the recycling chain. Smart choices in materials, color, and design can make packaging suitable for recycling and reuse as raw materials. Through the campaign Is jouw verpakking klaar voor morgen? (Is your packaging ready for tomorrow), Verpact, together with the Kennisinstituut Duurzaam Verpakken (KIDV), encourages producers to make more conscious choices. This approach not only benefits the environment but also provides financial rewards for companies.
Research by Verpact shows that 80% of companies consider improving the recyclability of plastic packaging to be very important. When developing new products, 89% take packaging design into account. To support producers, Verpact offers tools such as the KIDV Recyclecheck, along with training and advice. “Only by working together can we create a circular packaging chain,” emphasizes Hester Klein Lankhorst, chair of the Verpact board.
Verpact incentivizes the use of highly recyclable packaging with financial benefits. Companies using mono-materials, colorless or white plastic, can receive up to €0.60 per kilogram in discounts on recycling fees. Starting in 2025, the reward for using recycled plastic will increase from €0.10 to €0.20 per kilogram.
Through these measures, Verpact also prepares companies for the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This regulation requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030 and sets minimum recycled material percentages. Companies investing in sustainable packaging now position themselves as leaders in the transition to a circular economy.
