Vegetarian smoked sausage without artificial aromas

  • 17 January 2025

Van Gelder, known as a traditional Dutch supplier of fresh produce and a producer of plant-based meat alternatives, is introducing a groundbreaking product at Horecava: the first vegetarian smoked sausage that already meets the stricter EU regulations on smoke flavorings set to take effect in 2026. Made from peas and wheat, the sausage offers a healthy and sustainable choice without compromising on taste or quality. Specifically developed for professional kitchens in the hospitality sector, hospitals, and government institutions, Van Gelder is responding to the growing demand for natural and nutritious alternatives.

A smoked sausage ready for the future

With new regulations on the horizon, Van Gelder is taking the lead by producing smoked sausages without artificial flavorings well ahead of time. The EU has ruled that from July 1, 2026, smoke flavorings will no longer be allowed due to potential health risks. Van Gelder’s vegetarian smoked sausage maintains its authentic taste through a carefully crafted blend of herbs and natural flavors. The casing, made from seaweed, not only enhances the flavor and texture but also makes the sausage suitable for baking, grilling, and cooking.

Innovation in plant-based meat alternatives

The smoked sausage has been developed using innovative ingredients such as textured pea protein and a balanced mix of herbs, ensuring a traditional texture. According to Gerrit van Gelder, general director, the launch addresses the growing demand for high-quality vegetarian products: "We are seeing increasing demand for vegetarian products with artisanal textures and flavors. With this smoked sausage, we prove that a natural alternative made from vegetables can be both high-quality and future-proof, showing the market what is possible."
