Van Rooi Group has announced the establishment of Stichting Verde Varken, an initiative focused on improving animal welfare, environmental protection, and transparency within the pig farming industry. This launch is the culmination of years of collaboration with progressive pig farmers and supply chain partners. The foundation is committed to ensuring high-quality and affordable pork, with sustainability and environmental awareness as central pillars.
Participating pig farmers must meet strict standards that go beyond simply providing a better life for the animals. The focus is on biodiversity, circularity, and transparency throughout the entire supply chain. By working closely with genetics experts, feed producers, veterinarians, and transporters, the foundation aims for continuous improvement of the sector.
A key component of Verde Varken is data analysis. The supply chain management system, developed by Van Rooi Group, collects data that is used to further optimize the chain. In addition, participating pig farmers have calculated their carbon footprint in cooperation with Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk, using a Life Cycle Approach. This analysis includes factors such as feed composition, livestock development, housing type, manure management, and energy use.
Verde Varken emphasizes a balanced approach between nature, animal welfare, and entrepreneurship. The initiative is committed to the ongoing sustainability of the pig farming sector, with an eye on future improvement. By offering a chain-specific price, pig farmers are encouraged to actively contribute to the foundation’s objectives.
