Van Loon Group takes big steps

  • 28 December 2020

On 2 November 2020, Van Loon Group acquired the company Groot Vlees in Nuth. The meat processor is making great strides, because on Friday 11 December the company also announced its intention to take over Bonfait.

Takeover of Groot Vlees

Within Van Loon Group, Verhey Vlees is currently responsible for the processing of all cattle. After the acquisition, Groot Vlees will be integrated within Verhey Vlees. As a result, the name Groot Vlees will disappear and will change to Verhey Vlees Excellent as of 1 January 2021. Including Groot Vlees within Verhey Vlees is a logical choice, according to Marko Groot, former owner of Groot Vlees BV.

"The acquisition of Groot Vlees will give us access to a finely-meshed distribution network and a broader customer portfolio. This will enable us to bring our high-quality beef concepts to the market even better. Another advantage is that the company is located in Nuth, where we have already concentrated our beef activities at Verhey Vlees this year," says Erik van Loon, CEO of the Van Loon Group.

Plans to take over Bonfait

For Van Loon Group, the acquisition of Bonfait is a strategic choice to further invest in broadening its product range. In addition to the market for meat, meat products and meat substitutes, Van Loon Group is entering the national and international market for chilled meals and meal components with Bonfait. Bonfait will become an independent division within the group.

"We are a future-oriented company. Earlier we saw opportunities in the market of meat substitutes. A separate division for meals is the next step for us to continue to grow and develop sustainably. In this market, too, we are going to fulfil our role as chain director. What's more, Bonfait's customer portfolio fits in well with ours," says Erik van Loon, CEO of the Van Loon Group.

The intended transition of Bonfait (currently still part of Apetito) is still subject to approval by the Consumer and Market Authority (ACM) and advice from the work councils of Van Loon Group and Bonfait.
