V-Label launches C-Label for cultivated meat

  • 22 January 2025

V-Label GmbH, known for its V-Label certification for vegan and vegetarian products, is introducing a new certification system for cultivated meat products: C-Label (with the C standing for ‘cultivated’). With this initiative, the organization is responding to the growing demand for more sustainable and animal-friendly food.

Building trust in cultivated meat

Cultivated meat production is still in its early stages, but expectations are high. Consumers want assurance about the origin and production methods of this new protein source. C-Label addresses this need by providing a globally registered certification that ensures transparency and helps consumers better understand how cultivated meat is produced. This contributes to greater trust and broader acceptance. According to Renato Pichler, founder of V-Label, the certification marks an important step toward more sustainable food production. “Cultivated meat offers tremendous opportunities to eliminate inhumane farming practices and significantly reduce the environmental impact of livestock farming,” says Pichler.

First certified company

The British start-up Meatly is the first company to receive the C-Label certification for its cultivated chicken. CEO Owen Ensor emphasizes the importance of certification in gaining consumer trust. “As cultivated meat becomes more common, labels such as C-Label will play a crucial role in providing assurance about quality,” says Ensor.
