Upfield Launches Plastic-Free Tub for Plant Butters

  • 09 January 2024

Upfield, a global leader in plant-based foods, has introduced the world's first plastic-free and recyclable paper tub for its plant butters and spreads. Created in collaboration with Footprint, MCC, and Pagès Group, this innovative packaging marks a significant step towards sustainable practices.

The plastic-free paper tub made its debut in Austria with Upfield's Flora Plant brand in late 2023. Upfield plans to expand its use to other European markets and brands this year, with a lofty goal of replacing up to two billion plastic tubs by 2030, thereby eliminating over 25,000 tons of plastic waste annually.

Strategic Move to Reduce Plastic by 80% by 2030

This move aligns with Upfield's overarching objective of reducing plastic content across its portfolio by 80% by 2030. Recognizing the environmental impact of single-use plastics, the company sees the plastic-free paper tub as a crucial component of its commitment to sustainable packaging.

Innovative Paper Tub Technology

Developed with Footprint's material sciences technology, the paper tubs are constructed from compressed wet paper fibers, ensuring they are waterproof, oil-proof, and recyclable within local paper waste streams. The packaging has received Conventional Plastic Free Certification, with expectations to achieve home compostability certification by 2025.

David Haines, Group CEO for Upfield, emphasizes the significance of this innovative approach, stating, "Consumers today demand products that benefit both people and the planet. Our plant butters and spreads do exactly that. We're excited about the potential to launch this across our most iconic brands in some of our most important markets."

Unlike many paper packaging solutions, Upfield's paper tubs lack a plastic liner, allowing them to be recycled alongside other paper and cardboard household waste. Karina Cerdeira, Head of Packaging for Upfield, envisions further innovation, including adapting for compostability, developing new sizes and formats, and refining the optimal solution.

Yoke Chung, Co-founder and Chief Technology & Innovation Officer for Footprint, sees this collaboration as a transformative effort toward positive environmental change. The introduction of the oil-resistant paper tub sets a pioneering industry standard for plant-based spreads, emphasizing the shared commitment to sustainability between Upfield and Footprint.
