Umiami secures €32.5 million for plant-based meat innovation

  • 03 October 2023

Umiami, a French foodtech startup specializing in plant-based meat with a taste and texture nearly indistinguishable from real meat, has announced a remarkable funding round of €32.5 million. This brings their total financing to an impressive €100 million in just three years.

Umiami's distinctive 'umisation' technology is turning the industry on its head. They are the first in the world to produce a product with fewer than 10 ingredients that not only mimics the taste and texture of meat and fish but is also nutritionally equivalent – all without any controversial additives.

Industrialization and Innovation

This recent capital infusion, backed by industry heavyweights like Bpifrance, Astanor Ventures, and Redalpine, has three clear objectives: to further industrialize Umiami's groundbreaking technology, accelerate distribution in Europe, and firmly establish a presence in the United States.

Accelerated Distribution in Europe

Following their successful launch in Switzerland and expansion into other European countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands, Umiami is poised to make its mark on the U.S. market, which is already embracing plant-based meat alternatives. With the appointment of the seasoned John Hatto, boasting an impressive track record with companies like Lamb Weston and PepsiCo, at the helm of their U.S. operations, the company is more than ready to make its move.

Tristan Maurel, Umiami's CEO, aptly expresses the company's enthusiasm and ambitions: "With our exceptional team and cutting-edge technology, we're poised to shape the future of foodtech." Given their recent accomplishments and this latest round of funding, it's hard to disagree. The future looks bright for Umiami, and for everyone eagerly awaiting tasty and sustainable alternatives to traditional meat.
