Three prominent food factories in Flanders have recently been honored with the prestigious 'Factory of the Future Awards', presented by Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon (N-VA) and Walloon Vice Minister-President Willy Borsus (MR). This year's recipients include Cargill, Danone, and its subsidiary Alpro. This recognition pays tribute to the most advanced and forward-thinking production facilities in Belgium.
Cargill, based in Wevelgem, Danone in Rotselaar, and Alpro, also in Wevelgem, are among the ten awarded factories that have demonstrated their commitment to progress and innovation. The 'Factory of the Future Awards', now in their tenth edition, are a joint initiative of technology federations Agoria, Sirris, industry federations like Fevia, and other organizations.
These accolades recognize companies that lead in digitalization, automation, and optimizing their production processes to increase efficiency and minimize losses. Danone received two awards this year, one for its location in Rotselaar and one for Alpro. Alpro's initiatives such as the 'Technical Academy' and water reuse installation were particularly praised.
Danone's Flemish sites have made significant strides in digitalization and sustainable transport, significantly reducing their environmental impact. For instance, transport by inland vessel to the port of Antwerp has enabled Danone to save thousands of truck journeys annually. Meanwhile, Cargill in Izegem has reduced its CO2 emissions by 10 percent since 2021, thanks to strategic choices in its supply chain.
These accolades not only highlight the innovation prowess of these food factories but also underscore their dedication to sustainability and progress. With a network of 65 forward-looking production companies in Belgium, the sector continues to strive for further optimization and advancement, both technologically and in terms of sustainability.
