The intriguing world of global food production

  • 03 April 2024

The new series "Food for Thought", created by Kadir van Lohuizen and Doke Romeijn, sheds light on the complex and often surprising world of global food production. This series follows Van Lohuizen's earlier work "De Voedsel BV", expanding its focus from the Netherlands to the United States, Kenya, China, and the Middle East.

Cross-border research

Van Lohuizen’s journey started with a simple inquiry into the secrets behind greenhouses, mega farms, and distribution centers. From vertical greenhouses to an air-conditioned cow barn in the desert, and avocados being put ‘to sleep’ in sea containers for their journey, his access to farms and production facilities varied significantly by region. In the United States, his Dutch background was seen as a benefit, while in China, after initial obstacles, he was surprisingly able to visit factories unaccompanied.

Global trends and contrasts

The series highlights the vast differences in food production and consumption around the world. In Kenya, Van Lohuizen observed the substantial export of vegetables and fruits to Europe, where the day wages of local workers stand in stark contrast to the prices of these products in European stores. The series also reveals how shifts in consumption patterns, like the increasing demand for meat and dairy in China, affect food production.

"Food for Thought" will soon be available on NPO 2 and NPO Start. It invites viewers to ponder the global food industry without imposing any specific judgment. It's an opportunity for a more conscious reflection on our food and the systems that produce it.
