The four technical universities in the Netherlands (Delft, Eindhoven, Twente and Wageningen) are appealing to politicians in The Hague to embed technological innovations structurally in their agendas. Technological innovations are an indispensable link in the transition to a resilient, safe and sustainable future. A future after corona with new societal challenges requiring new solutions. In order to communicate the relevance of these innovations and to involve the general public, the Tech Speech will take place for the first time on 1 October.
In times of crisis or other unexpected twists and turns, it is important that a society has the ability to intervene, change or bend along quickly. A resilient society. In this technological equivalent of the Speech from the Throne, the four universities of technology, united in the 4TU.Federatie, together with other knowledge institutes and the business community, want to draw attention to the fact that the corona crisis makes the importance of resilience visible. Technological innovations are essential in this respect.
"The Covid-19 crisis makes a number of things clear," says Louise O. Fresco, chairman of 4TU and board chairman of Wageningen University & Research. "For reasons of health, climate and scarce resources, we need to deploy knowledge, technology and innovation for a liveable and sustainable society. The future is high-tech, but ecologically, ethically and economically. We need to have a social debate about this quickly, fed by the universities of technology".
Only by taking responsibility together will we ensure a smooth transition to a resilient, safe and sustainable future, as will become clear in the Techrede. The Techrede highlights various themes in the transition, such as climate, health and food. Where do we come from, where are we going and what is needed for that?
The message of technical universities is carried by innovators from industry (from start-ups to SMEs to multinationals), scientists and young people. They show their involvement in the run-up to the Techrede through a series of vlogs and a 4TU series. In each episode, a presenter looks for the answer to the question of how technological innovations will take us to a bright future.
The four technical universities in the Netherlands are united in the 4TU.Federation. 4TU is committed to strengthening and bundling technological knowledge. The technical universities want to provide sufficient and well-trained engineers and technological designers, internationally leading and socially relevant research and promote cooperation between research institutes and companies.
