Sustainable steam use with investment subsidy

  • 23 March 2021

Steam is a very widely used heat carrier within the food industry, but often fuelled by natural gas. Considerable changes are needed for this method of heat production as part of the energy transition. The electric generation of steam is a sustainable solution. To stimulate the energy transition for steam, it is possible to apply for a subsidy for electric steam boilers.

Electric boilers

Gasless electric steam boilers offer the sustainable solution because they emit no emissions. In a pressure vessel, electric elements heat the water. The electric steam boilers have a compact layout, are in many cases free of periodic inspections and do not require a boiler house. Up to a demand of 1500 kg/h steam, Scharff Techniek has an electric solution available.

Energy investment deduction (EIA)

Since 2020, the replacement of gas-fired steam boilers with electric steam installations has been included in the Energy List (270104) at the initiative of Scharff Techniek. This makes you eligible for the Energy Investment deduction (EIA) when purchasing an electric steam boiler. Please note that the EIA only applies to new electric steam installations.

The Energy Investment Deduction (EIA) is a fiscal regulation with which the government supports you with investments in energy-saving equipment and renewable energy. As in 2020, the EIA in 2020 is 45% of the investment amount. The additional deduction of 45% comes on top of the normal depreciation on the asset. You can download the complete Energy List 2021 here.

Other solutions

Is replacement by an electric boiler not possible because you do not yet have the necessary electrical infrastructure? There are also other measures you can take to become more sustainable.

For a number of years, the replacement of a steam boiler by a steam boiler in which the flue gases do not contain more than 60 milligrams of NOx per normal cubic meter at 3% O2 has been on the Environmental List. In addition, various modifications and maintenance of your existing steam system are possible to reduce fuel consumption. This can be as much as 25% by reducing the steam pressure, insulating the boiler and piping, regularly checking steam traps and turning off the boiler when there is no steam demand for a longer period of time. Also read on the website of the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) about solutions for these necessary changes.
