Suiker Unie wins FNLI award 2019

  • 14 October 2019

Suiker Unie won the FNLI Award 2019 on 10 October. For the first time, the Dutch Food Industry Federation (Federatie Nederlandse Levensmiddelenindustrie) presented this award to individuals or teams who work admirably to take innovative initiatives or projects to the next level. With the award Suiker Unie is 'Frontrunner of the food industry'.

Suiker Unie won with the 'On the road on its own green gas' project. The project started with bulk vehicles with a gas engine instead of a diesel engine. These gas engines have recently become technically capable of pulling heavy trucks. Suiker Unie, which produces 25 million m3 a year and is the largest green gas producer in the Netherlands, now has five bulk trucks that run 100% on its own biogas. The CO2 emissions of these bulk trucks are 90% lower. This amounts to 160 tons of CO2 per truck per year. In addition, compared to a Euro 6 diesel engine, 75% to 90% less particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are emitted.

Ad Jansen, logistics officer, is the driving force behind 'On the road on our own green gas'. He is constantly looking for ways to improve the transport of sugar in order to make it as safe and sustainable as possible.

Together with Euroma and Lipton (Unilever), Suiker Unie was nominated for the FNLI award. The participants in the FNLI annual meeting in Amersfoort on 10 October selected Suiker Unie as the winner.
