Study reveals insight into diffusion of Listeria

  • 13 June 2023

Minh Tran, a researcher at the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB), has gained important insights into bacterial diffusion processes and their implications for controlling Listeria monocytogenes through his doctoral research. His research sheds new light on the movement of proteins and their ability to adapt to different environments, and highlights the importance of temperature and stress on protein diffusion.

Tran's research focused specifically on Listeria monocytogenes, a major pathogen that causes severe food poisoning in humans. His findings show that Listeria has a unique ability to resist hypertonic stress, providing crucial information for developing strategies to effectively combat the pathogen.

Computer simulations

In addition to his work with Listeria monocytogenes, Tran used advanced computer simulations to investigate the diffusion of proteins in the periplasm of Escherichia coli. His study challenged previous assumptions and demonstrated the influence of surrounding membranes on the diffusion coefficient.

Results

The results of Tran's study have important implications for our understanding of the physiology of Listeria monocytogenes and may lead to new strategies for controlling this pathogen. Tran conducted his research during his PhD program at the GBB, with funding through a European Marie Skłodowska-Curie program. He is currently working as a postdoc at Uppsala University, where he is continuing his research.
