Stricter standards for honey, fruit juices, jam and milk

  • 08 February 2024

Europe has achieved a milestone in improving standards for food products, particularly for honey, fruit juices, jam, and milk. The political agreement between the European Parliament and the Council to revise and tighten these standards is applauded by the European Commission.

Origin labeling for honey

One of the key changes is mandatory origin labeling for honey. This means that blended honey must list the countries of origin on the label, along with the percentage for each country in decreasing order. This provides consumers with more transparency and helps prevent fraud.

Innovation in fruit juices

Additionally, three new categories of fruit juice are being introduced, including juice with reduced sugar content, to offer consumers more choices. It is also clarified that fruit juices contain no added sugars, better informing consumers about what they're consuming.

Improved quality of jam

The minimum quantity of fruit in jam is being increased, resulting in products of better quality with lower sugar content. Furthermore, member states are allowed to use the term "marmalade" as a synonym for jam, aligning regulations better with local customs.

Simplification of milk labeling

Finally, labeling rules for milk are being simplified, eliminating the distinction between different types of milk and allowing lactose-free milk.

The political agreement still needs formal approval from legislators. Upon approval, member states have a year and a half to transpose the new rules into national law before they become applicable across the entire European Union. This marks an important step forward in ensuring food quality and consumer protection within the EU.
