Share of meat substitutes continues to grow

  • 03 September 2019

The number of meat substitutes sold in supermarkets has increased by 51 percent since 2017. This increase is at the expense of the sale of real meat. That's what research agency IRI reports. Since 2016, the number of vegetarian options at AH has increased by 33 percent to 100 different products and at Jumbo there are 200 different products in store.

Share of meat substitutes continues to grow

Over the past 52 weeks, 2.6 billion euros has been spent on meat products, of which 123 million euros has been spent on meat substitutes. That is 4.5%. The market leader in the field of meat substitutes is Vion. The emerging brand is Beyond Meat, which is currently building a new plant in the Netherlands. The rise of meat substitutes is also unmistakable internationally. Beyond Meat - which went public earlier this year in New York - saw its turnover grow by no less than 300 percent in the second quarter: from 17 million dollars last year to 67 million dollars this year. Beyond Meat will be included in HelloFresh dishes from mid-September.
