Schouten Europe acquires Nijland Food

  • 03 January 2022

The Giessen family business Schouten Europe, producer of meat and fish substitutes, is acquiring Nijland Food from Goor, which recently went bankrupt. Schouten will take over all of Nijland's buildings and machinery and will ensure that as many of Nijland's employees as possible can keep their jobs.

Further growth

The market for vegetable alternatives to meat and fish has grown strongly in recent years. Competition in the market has also increased. "We have always outsourced production and packaging so that we were flexible and could focus on innovation. In recent years, however, there has been an increasing shortage of production and packaging capacity. This did not benefit our market position. This takeover gives us room to grow further'', says CEO and owner Henk Schouten.

No strangers

Schouten and Nijland are not strangers to each other. Nijland has packaged products for Schouten for twelve years. For the last five years, Nijland has also produced some Schouten products. Nijland also packed for other parties and chicken was also processed in a separate hall. "We specialise in the development, production and packaging of plant-based products and the processing of chicken does not fit in with that. We will therefore not be continuing this'', says Henk Schouten.

Strong network

The acquisition of Nijland does not mean that Schouten will produce and package all its products itself. We have a strong network of specialised and valued production partners that will certainly continue to add value to our company and with whom we would like to collaborate", says Henk Schouten.
