It’s a well-known tradition in the Dutch industry: the "Open Bedrijven Dag" (Open Business Day), when local companies agree to open their doors to the public simultaneously. On Saturday, November 2, the Emmen-based packaging machine manufacturer Repak took part in this event. Visitors, ranging from employees’ family members to curious passersby, had the opportunity to see how the various departments take a concept and transform it—from raw materials to components, and from those components to a fully assembled packaging machine. Over 400 people came to see what makes Repak’s thermoforming packaging machines so special that they’re shipped all over the world.
The in-house production of components particularly surprised visitors. While many knew that Repak builds machines, it wasn’t widely known that they also manufacture a significant portion of the components themselves. At each department, visitors were given explanations about the specific processes taking place there.
To top it all off, visitors could even operate the Repak RE-20 themselves, packaging a stroopwafel—a treat as quintessentially Dutch as Repak’s packaging machines. According to Repak colleagues, many were struck by the deep interest shown and, at times, the surprisingly technical questions posed by the visitors.
