Pringles shifts to recyclable paper packaging

  • 11 January 2024

Pringles is ushering in an environmentally friendly change to its iconic canister. The familiar cylindrical packaging, launched in 1970, is undergoing a transformation with a paper base replacing the traditional metal end. This new 165-gram canister is made up of 90% paper and can be easily recycled in the paper bin, giving the packaging a second life. In addition to preserving the distinctive taste, the packaging also adopts a more natural look that aligns with Pringles' sustainable focus.

The distinctive Pringles canister, designed to keep chips fresh for up to 15 months, retains its functionality. The plastic lid, largely made of recyclable polypropylene, contributes to reducing food waste. While the revamped canister maintains the familiar taste, it now boasts a more natural appearance. The introduction of the recyclable Pringles canister, comprised of 90% paper, is a crucial step towards achieving the sustainability goals of Pringles and its parent company, Kellanova, involving an investment of over 100 million euros for the entire project.

Sustainability Initiative

The new design stems from the ESG program, "Better Days," where Pringles commits to environmentally friendly measures. Johan Van Batenburg, director of the Pringles factory in Mechelen, emphasizes the importance of sustainable packaging and reveals that the investment underscores Pringles' dedication to a healthier planet.

Recyclable Canister in Detail

By replacing the steel end with paper, recycling the canisters becomes more straightforward. Empty canisters can be easily deposited into the paper and cardboard recycling bin. The used paper is mostly sourced from recycled materials, similar to the current packaging. Clear recycling instructions on the packaging indicate that the paper components of the canister are recyclable.

Consumer Judgment

Consumer research reveals that 70% of respondents find the new canister more appealing in terms of look and feel than its predecessor. An impressive 93% believe that the new canister positions Pringles as a brand that cares about the environment. This change marks a positive shift in the packaging industry and underscores Pringles' commitment to a more sustainable future.
