Preventing 11.5 million kilos of waste every week

  • 27 August 2021

Reducing food waste is one of the most important measures against climate change worldwide. Many people do not know this yet. Everyone can help and make a positive contribution. Every piece of bread or squeezed dairy packet counts. If the whole of the Netherlands does not waste food at home for a week, it will save 11.5 million kilos of good food, which is about 40 million kg less CO2 emissions," said Toine Timmermans, director of Samen Tegen Voedselverspoelen.

Save millions of slices of bread during wasting-free week

In one week, the whole of the Netherlands can save over 60 million slices of bread at home by not wasting any. Bakers and supermarkets participate in the campaign of the Samen Tegen Voedselversw wast wast (Together Against Food Waste) foundation to prevent bread wastage among consumers. On no less than 3 million loaves of bread they put the sticker 'Do you eat every slice of bread too? Bread is the most wasted product by Dutch households, followed by dairy products, vegetables, fruit, potatoes and meat. All these products will play the leading role during the National Waste Free Week from 7 to 13 September.

Activities across the country by over 100 partners

On Sustainable Tuesday, 7 September, Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Together Against Food Waste) will open the third national Waste Free Week together with the Dutch Nutrition Centre and over 100 companies, social organisations, governments and schools. During this week activities will take place all over the country to inspire consumers to buy, cook and store food without wasting money. The activities surrounding bread are part of this.
