Plant protein from the Netherlands: wanted and unknown

  • 01 March 2023

Interest in foods containing protein produced in the Netherlands has risen sharply over the past five years. However, the recognition and value of plant proteins such as legumes and nuts is low, unlike meat and dairy. Supermarkets and independent bodies are appropriate parties to increase awareness and availability of home-grown plant proteins.

This is according to the third consumer survey Eiwitten van Eigen Bodem, conducted by DVJ-Insights, commissioned by the Producer Organisation Protein Farmers of the Netherlands. The study - previously conducted in 2017 and in 2021 - monitors awareness of and demand for products with Dutch-produced protein.

Supporting Local Farmers

For consumers, the added value of products based on Dutch plant proteins lies mainly in supporting local farmers. A notable but explainable increase compared to 2017 and 2021. Henk Janknegt, chairman of the Producer Organisation Protein Farmers of the Netherlands: "The study confirms a growing consumer desire to connect more with the farmers who produce our food."

Biodiversity & Soil

Interestingly, increased biodiversity and improved soil fertility rank low on the list of drivers for Dutch people to buy homegrown protein products.
