PAN: 7 out of 10 Dutch demand less pesticide use

  • 13 March 2024

The Netherlands is renowned for its flourishing agricultural sector. However, this sector is currently under the spotlight, not for its successes, but for its intensive use of pesticides. Recent research commissioned by PAN Netherlands indicates that the majority of Dutch citizens desire a significant reduction in the use of pesticides.

A recent proposal to halve pesticide usage by 2030 was voted down, influenced by the agricultural lobby and conservative parties. Concurrently, the controversial glyphosate was re-approved for another ten years. These developments sharply contrast with public opinion. Research shows that 70% of Dutch citizens favor halving pesticide use. Furthermore, 73% advocate for banning the 30 most toxic pesticides by 2030.

The consequences of agricultural poisons

Following Cyprus, the Netherlands is one of the largest users of agricultural poisons in Europe. Annually, nearly the entire agricultural area is treated with a total of 5 million kg of pesticides. These substances, including insecticides and glyphosate, have far-reaching consequences. They damage water and soil life, kill insects, destroy biodiversity, and are linked to serious health issues such as cancer and Parkinson's disease.

The impact on local residents

Residents living near agricultural areas directly experience the effects of these pesticides. Exposure to a mix of various pesticides is particularly high around fields where lilies are cultivated. The health effects of these pesticide cocktails are not fully investigated yet, but they are a significant concern for many Dutch citizens. For example, 38% of the population believes that the cultivation of lilies, which do not directly contribute to food security, should be banned.

The way forward

The research by Multiscope, carried out on behalf of the Pesticide Action Network Netherlands (PAN-NL), shows a strong desire among the Dutch population for stricter regulations and a shift towards organic farming. While other EU member states financially support the transition to organic agriculture, the Netherlands remains hesitant. PAN-NL urges political parties to respond to this public call by replacing chemical pesticides with mechanical methods and investing in sustainable alternatives.
