Organic food sales grow by 51% over five years

  • 10 October 2024

Sales of organic products in the Netherlands have increased by over 50% in the past five years, according to recent figures from CPS GFK. With a growth of 51.7%, sales reached 1.4 billion euros, while the rest of the market grew by only 25%. This significant increase is largely due to the expanded availability of organic products in supermarkets.

Increased availability driving growth

In recent years, the range of organic products has expanded significantly in many stores. Supermarkets play a crucial role in this, accounting for 76% of total organic sales. By allocating more shelf space to organic products and often offering them as a standard option, consumers are more inclined to choose organic. This strategy has driven substantial growth in the organic sector, which continued to expand in the first half of 2024.

Organic remains on the rise

In the first six months of 2024, organic sales increased by 10%, while the rest of the market contracted by 2%. Categories such as organic poultry saw a growth of 31%, while citrus fruits, yogurt, and tomatoes grew by more than 10%. Supermarkets also boosted organic sales further by employing nudging techniques, such as shelf tags and floor stickers. Between 2021 and 2024, seven nudging campaigns were launched as part of a European initiative aimed at encouraging consumers to choose organic more often.
