The Dutch plant-based food market shows mixed results, according to a new report from the Good Food Institute (GFI). While sales grew by 1.8% to 309 million euros in 2023, the number of units sold and overall volume declined. Products like oat drinks and vegan cheese remain popular, though higher prices continue to impact demand for plant-based alternatives.
Early 2024 data shows a modest recovery in sales volume following a dip in 2023. Notably, plant-based milk and drinks saw an 8.2% increase in value sales in 2023, despite a decrease in volume. Higher prices for plant-based options, particularly compared to animal-based alternatives, continue to pose a challenge. For instance, plant-based meat remains 38% more expensive than animal-based meat, even after price decreases in 2023.
While overall demand for plant-based products is leveling off, certain segments like oat milk, vegan cream, and cheese are still on the rise. Oat drinks represented 42% of total plant-based milk sales volume, and soy remains the leading base ingredient for plant-based yogurt and cream. New product launches and innovations continue to drive growth in the plant-based food market in the Netherlands.
