On October 23, 2024, a significant milestone in the protein transition was reached in Boxmeer. Nutreco welcomed more than fifty industry representatives for the official opening of the world’s first dedicated food-grade powder production facility for cell feed. This innovative step underscores Nutreco’s commitment to feeding a growing global population sustainably.
Nutreco CEO David Blakemore, in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in the sector. He highlighted the considerable challenges the industry faces in feeding a growing world population. According to Blakemore, Nutreco plays a leading role here, supporting the development of cell-cultured proteins.
Emeline Fellus from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) delivered an insightful keynote on the future of our food system. She pointed out that current systems, focused on maximum efficiency and caloric supply, no longer align with the values and challenges of the 21st century. Fellus advocates for a balanced approach, combining traditional and alternative proteins with a reduced impact on nature.
Fellus also addressed the obstacles facing the alternative protein industry, including the lack of global regulation and the need for a fair transition for farmers. Attendees were given a tour of the new facility and Nutreco’s global laboratory, Masterlab, where research on ultra-specialty ingredients and cell feed is conducted.
