Nudging gives organic products a significant sales boost

  • 27 January 2025

A successful experiment in Finland has shown that nudging—subtle adjustments in store environments—can significantly increase sales of organic products. In a Finnish supermarket, sales of organic carrots rose by an impressive 253%. This experiment was part of the European project 'Nudging Organic,' in which Finland, Sweden, Flanders, and the Netherlands explored how nudging can help position organic products more effectively.

Smart product placement works

In Vantaa, Finland, organic carrots were given a prominent new spot in a K-Citymarket store, accompanied by communication such as ‘With just one carrot, you can already make a difference.’ This led to a significant increase in sales. Heidi Haavisto-Meier from ProLuomu stated: “It was a great collaboration across the supply chain, with positive feedback from both the retailer and the producer. The participating store has even decided to keep the campaign materials for future years."

Similar successes in other countries

Nudging also delivered tangible results in other participating countries. In Sweden, relocating organic products to busier store aisles resulted in a 65% sales increase. In the Netherlands, subtle visual cues on the shelves contributed to a 20% rise in sales. Flanders experienced a 33% increase in organic product sales through positive framing and supporting campaign visuals.
