NPN creates hygiene code for food supplements

  • 03 April 2023

To offer the food supplement industry concrete tools to meet quality requirements, NPN is developing a hygiene code together with consultancy firm Précon.

A hygiene code is a guide of rules on food safety and hygiene based on HACCP. Companies can start using this hygiene code, which will specifically target food supplements, to comply with legal requirements. With this, NPN is proactively taking a great step in promoting quality in the industry.

Improved quality

NPN's mission is to provide consumers with safe and effective food supplements. To this end, it offers its members various tools that support quality and safety. With the advent of a hygiene code, companies can easily comply with food safety regulations. Both NPN member and non-affiliated companies can start using the code. This will raise the quality of the entire industry to a higher level. And that is important for high-quality and safe food supplements on the market.

Agreement in the industry

The hygiene code lays down food safety hazards and measures to control them. Once finalised, the hygiene code will be officially approved by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and the enforcement agency NVWA. This means there is agreement in the industry on the applicable hazards and measures. Both among companies in the chain such as buyers and suppliers, but also between the companies and the government. This provides clarity and prevents discussion.

Expected publication summer 2023

A working group consisting of 10 members working at various food supplement companies is helping to develop the hygiene code. The working group is representative of the industry and provides input and reviews the draft code. The hygiene code is expected to be officially published in summer 2023. NPN will make the code available free of charge for member companies and for a fee for non-members.
