In recent years, supermarket food prices have seen a significant increase, partly due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Products that were primarily imported from these countries have become notably more expensive. In response, research was conducted to determine whether genetically modified (GM) foods, which are typically cheaper, were being sold and offered more frequently in supermarkets. However, researchers from the Committee on Genetic Modification (COGEM) found no noticeable difference.
COGEM recently published a study on the trends in the supply and demand of genetically modified (GM) foods in supermarkets. The sharp price increases resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict prompted this research. Generally, GM products have lower production costs, which should result in lower supermarket prices. It was therefore expected that products containing GM ingredients would be purchased and sold more due to their lower prices. However, the study found little to no difference.
