Sustainable and recyclable packaging is increasingly high on the agenda of the management and managers in the industry. The food industry is also taking its responsibility and has been making food packaging more sustainable and recyclable for many years. In order to further strengthen this development, the industry sustainability plan 2019 - 2025 of the Federation of the Dutch Food Industry (FNLI) was recently adopted and published. In this plan, the food industry raises the bar within the sector for making food packaging more sustainable in the coming years. In order to achieve this, packaging technologists often work on our packaging of the future on a daily basis and become even more important within their organisations than they already were.
In the Branch Sustainability Plan, responsible and sustainable use of materials are the central pillars for the new policy towards 2025. In doing so, the food industry is working to standardise the material used in food packaging on the Dutch market, as an important step towards a more high-quality recycling of food packaging. The document also includes a so-called 'Ten-point Plan 2019-2025' and this list of actions and interventions is intended as a concrete action perspective for FNLI members and the Federation Office. For example, by 2025 all plastic food packaging will be made of (HD)PP, (HD)PE and PET, which will reduce the great diversity in plastics and increase the possibilities for recycling. With the advent of the 'Sustainable & Recyclable Food Packaging' plan, the FNLI is setting new standards for the collective Dutch packaging policy.
