New EU campaign puts aquaculture in the spotlight

  • 02 April 2025

In cooperation with Member States and the Aquaculture Advisory Council, the Commission aims to increase awareness, understanding, and support for the sector. Aquaculture, as a source of fish, shellfish, and algae within European food production, takes centre stage.

The campaign is being rolled out widely and has been translated into all EU languages. It focuses on nine species: mussels, trout, clams, sea bream, oysters, carp, salmon, meagre, and seaweed. Through videos, educational materials, and a road trip visiting aquaculture sites, the sector offers insights into how it works. Both production processes and the role of producers in the food chain are highlighted.

Stagnation due to a lack of support

European aquaculture production has not grown since 2018, while global production continues to rise. According to the Commission, limited social acceptance of new aquaculture sites and insufficient awareness of the benefits remain key obstacles. With this campaign, the Commission aims to show how aquaculture contributes to sustainable food production and local communities.
