New dairy trend: Kerry launches hybrid dairy-oat range

  • 22 March 2024

Kerry Dairy Consumer Foods is bringing a fresh impulse to the dairy market with the introduction of Smug Dairy, a new chilled brand line that combines dairy and oats. This move is seen as a first in its category in the United Kingdom.

The launch includes six products: three 'cheddar' cheese alternatives, two butter-like products, and a type of milk. Retailers will introduce these products in stages starting from March 25th, with Tesco and Morrisons expected to stock the complete range by May. Kerry Dairy's aim with this step is to bring genuine innovation to the dairy category and challenge the black-and-white perceptions of the dairy and non-dairy markets.

Health and environmental awareness

Kerry Dairy Consumer Foods claims that Smug’s cheddar cheese contains 35% less saturated fat and has a smaller CO2 footprint compared to "standard cheese". Data from YouGov and ComRes indicate that one in four British shoppers are considering reducing their consumption due to health, environmental, and ethical concerns.

Victoria Southern, Director of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation at Kerry Dairy Consumer Foods, highlights the innovative nature of this launch. She asserts that the Smug Dairy product line not only offers a new way for dairy enthusiasts to enjoy dairy but also creates a dairy category that is ready for the future. "The Smug Dairy range has 40% less saturated fats and saves up to 54% less CO2e emissions per kilogram than traditional dairy products, without compromising the rich and creamy taste consumers love," she adds.

With this launch, Kerry Dairy Consumer Foods is pursuing ongoing innovation and sustainability in the dairy industry to inspire a better future.
