In recent years, the German food processing industry has been very self-centred and competitive. This has changed of late and the industry is becoming more open. Therefore, now is a very good time for Dutch companies to take advantage of the new cooperation opportunities. To investigate where these opportunities lie, the Agricultural Attaché Network (LAN) in Germany commissioned a market study in cooperation with the RVO to provide an overview of innovative institutions in this field.
Themes such as the environment, climate, animal welfare, packaging, 'food miles', health, innovative ingredients and combating food waste play an increasingly important role in Germany and the Netherlands. Consumers consider sustainability increasingly important when choosing certain foods and therefore demand more transparency about the production method. At the same time, a lot is happening in the field of innovation. Digitalisation, traceability, robotisation, automation and AI are making it possible to carry out processes in the food processing industry more efficiently. These developments are creating opportunities for cooperation in the field of knowledge exchange and new cooperative possibilities.
The objective of the market study was to map the trends in food and technology in the food processing industry, with an overview of how and by whom they are realised. This results in a map of food innovation clusters and a database in which one can search for institutions that pick up trends. The study also examines what the needs are in Germany in this field. A survey identified the first points of contact for Dutch companies, which can be read about in the study.
