The National Week Without Meat will be expanded on a European scale from 2023. The expansion of the Dutch initiative abroad is possible thanks to the European grant programme 'Horizon Action Grant'. The first country to take its turn in this expansion will be Belgium, in October 2023. After Belgium, other European countries will follow.
Thanks to the 'Horizon Action Grant' of the 'Horizon Europe funding programme', the campaign can be rolled out in several European countries from 2023, with the aim of also showing residents of other European countries how delicious and easy it is to eat less meat for a day. In doing so, the campaign will contribute to the 2030 climate goals and a sustainable, healthy and future-proof diet. In 2023, the campaign will take place first in Belgium. Each subsequent year until 2026, an additional European country will be added.
In the Netherlands, the fifth edition of this impactful sustainability campaign took place this year. The campaign is very successful in the Netherlands. One in five Dutch people took part in the campaign week in March, which was supported by a record number of 80 partners from the food industry. The impact of the campaign could also be seen in sales figures. Sales in volume of meat substitutes increased by 108.5% during the week compared to an average week that year. While meat sales in volume during the week were 8.4% lower.
