From 8 to 14 March, the fourth edition of the National Week Without Meat will take place in the Netherlands. Since the first edition in March 2018, this sustainability campaign has become an annual initiative. During National Week Without Meat, participants are inspired to eat vegetarian for a week.
Figures from research firm Blauw show that 46% of Dutch people saw the Week Without Meat last year, in 2019 the percentage was 43%. The number of participants is also rising. Last year, 14% of Dutch people (2.4 million people) participated in the campaign. In 2019, this was 11%. In 2020, no less than 200.4% more meat substitutes were sold compared to an average week.
National Week Without Meat is a non-commercial initiative. The campaign is made possible by nearly 60 partners from the food industry. Isabel Boerdam, initiator of the National Week Without Meat: "As the foundation, we have once again opted for a collective partner model in 2021, with each partner contributing to the campaign in its own way. Together we will make this week a national success."
