Most consumers opposed to a ban on meat names

  • 15 October 2020

Are terms like 'veggie burger' and 'vegaworst' misleading? The European Parliament will vote on 19 October to ban these terms; they would be confusing for consumers. Almost two thirds of the more than 22 000 members of the Radar Test Panel disagree and oppose a ban. The majority is not confused either: "Sausages are known to everyone. Vegas sausage is the vegetarian variety'. Many people wonder whether the EU does not have more important things to deal with.

Moreover, not everyone who is confused thinks that the terms should be banned. A manufacturer of vegetable yoghurt has already cleverly responded to the discussion: they call their products 'yoghurt', without the 'hurt' - which in English means 'pain'. A reference to the absence of (animal) suffering in the vegan alternative.

The fact that the discussion has caused a lot of controversy is also shown by the petition of ProVeg; a worldwide organisation that is committed to the transition to a more vegetarian lifestyle. Their petition against the ban has already been signed almost 130,000 times at the time of writing.
